Writer’s constipation…

Yesterday I was sitting in front of my computer for hours…trying to work on a new detailed outline for the film. It was a struggle to say the least. Writer’s block, thinker’s block, blocker’s block…I had it all. Finally I stood up and began praying – and with bit more desperation in this prayer than my others. I sat back down at my picnic table and opened a new blank Word document. I began applying pressure to random keys, as if I knew what I was supposed to be typing. Then, I began erasing, as my ideas were again scattered…then writing, and erasing, and then, about two hours later, what do you know, the writing had overtaken the erasing and I had a 49 point outline of the film. At about 2:00 am I was feeling an interpersonal victory of sorts, a sense that I can turn my camera on with a deliberate reason for doing so. That’s a good feeling, especially after several years of certainty, yet lack of clarity – certainty that I should be working on this film – lack of clarity as to what the film was about.
So, know that prayers are being answered. Part of my midnight prayer was that the Lord would protect me from any spiritual attack that was stifling my creativity. Whether or not this was part of the problem, the Lord answered my prayer and allowed me to complete the outline. Kosovo is a spiritually dark region – from the atrocities of the war to the spiritual battle that’s been waged in this region for hundreds of years, this is a place where your spiritual armor needs to be on good and tight. I’ve heard that said many times before regarding Kosovo, and it’s true. The Bible makes it emphatically clear that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against something far more evil, powerful, and not of this realm. So, know that your prayers are desperately needed and greatly appreciated. The next six weeks are going to be extremely challenging. I’m halfway through the shoot, but I feel like the true test is yet to come…as is the true reward. So, pray, pray, and pray – for spiritual protection, vision, creativity, and the ability to listen and follow the real director of this project, the author of life.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12

Blocker's block ... that's the worst kind! You made it through the obstacle ... you are moving forward and you have direction! It is astonishing how you're able to march forward ... through the darkness; to retrace the steps of fallen soldiers and civilians; to press on in a war torn land and on beyond in the battle between heaven and earth. You are not alone. Prayers wake me in the middle of the night, in the middle of your day. Press on!
AMEN! I will keep praying. I'm glad you don't have bloggers block.
I am stoked that you got an outline going! 49 points!
Thanks for your comments on my blog. I'll keep you posted on the new job, the upcoming U2 tour and all other relevant things.
I hear the hallelujah chorus - overcoming writer's block is a joyful thing.
by the way - I want a print of that field photo. Gorgeous.
I will definitely be praying for you. I am really missing you! Writers block and not being able to access your own creativity is no fun. It takes away your passion, and passion is crucial for success with any creative project. I have had struggles with writer's block for awhile. You really have to fight to get through it, and once you do....you make rapid progress. I love you!
Found your blog - and am a HUGE fan. I'm in need of a new advisor here at the White Hou... "the ranch"... and you seem like you've got a good creative head on you. We need someone who can spin a good yarn or two. Call me. 202-456-1111
I'll put in a few good words for you. You're an inspiration.
oh, isaac . . . . .
i just had writer's block.
love, mom
Isaac....I too have been praying for you. Hope they are being answered.
The pictures you have taken and the short stories you have been telling, certainly show that you not only have a passion, but a gift as well. I will be anxiously waiting for you to get the documentary on TV. I know it will be great! (Your Mom is a laugh, love her comment!)
Stay warm, healthy and safe.
Love you,
Glenda
Garrett and I have you in our prayers! We're believing for you to have a continuous renewal of creativity and a fresh state of mind each time you set out to work on this project. Can't wait to see it all finished.
isaac... what are you capturing these still photographs with? digital camera, or your video camera? its beautiful photography.
Isaac, thanks for visiting my blog. This post you wrote is excellent. It's a great example of the creative work that we are supposed to do -- to push through moment by moment the nausea and self-recrimination and fear of creating to arrive at what we need to say creatively. And, I also liked the thought of praying for protection against the joyless and accusatory spirits who would love nothing more than to choke all of the life out of the world by stopping creative work from happening. I will add that to my prayer time, and remember you specifically. Keep up the great work, and I, too, would love to know about those beautiful pics.
I’m using two different digital cameras – one’s a 7.1 megapixel Canon S70 for the candid shots. This one can fit in my pocket and remain fairly hidden when out, and also has plenty of manual controls and shoots raw files. Camera number two is a 14 megapixel DCS Pro SLR/c with a 35mm full sized sensor and is manufactured by Kodak. It uses Canon lenses – 99% of the time a Canon 17-40mm is the lens used.
Thanks for the good words and the props on the pictures…means a lot from two of the most creatively gifted people I know!
