Music...

I spoke with a filmmaker in Kosovo on the phone the other day. We talked about the possibility of creating “The Mitrovica Film Festival” in Kosovo. We would be accepting short films, most likely fifteen minutes and under. We’d set parameters, and then let the local filmmakers tell their own stories. We would then capture the filmmakers as they tell their stories – following them as they create their films, and then implementing their stories and their films into our documentary.

The films would include drama, documentary, horror, comedy etc… We would also have a common thread in all of the projects...we could also think about requiring all projects be multi-ethnic, Serbian/Albanian productions.
Hmmm, maybe the common thread could be a song…or just a line from a song - from Bob Dylan or U2, and then having all the filmmakers use the lyrics as a theme to their production. An example of this could be:
“Every Grain of Sand” Bob Dylan -or - “Where the Streets Have No Name” U2
Hmmmmm….

Hey Isaac,

I think this idea has a lot of potential. My question would be whether or not there are enough filmmakers in the area? If there are then this could be like a "project greenlight" type of documentary, the way they tell the filmmakers stories and follow them aroudn in the time leading up to the competition. This could be cool as you take a look at the various filmmakers lives and culminate with the festival.
One theme that I like is the idea of 'hope.' Are the filmmakers optimistic or pessimistic as they look toward the future of Kosovo? How do they feel about their country? How do they deal with the tragedy? As they tell their story, do they see hope? Is Kosovo a rising sun or a setting sun to them? Do they only see confusion or do they see sense in the midst of chaos? I think that chronicling the filmmakers and their journey, struggles to tell their own story would be powerful...especially when they all come together for the festival...which would allow the various roads to converge at a large community event. I think this concept has enormous potential, but again I would want to find out first whether or not it is 'doable' or if you would have to hold every filmmakers hand through the process, in which case it becomes less of a documentary and more of a farce...which could also be fun:) I like the possibilities though!!!!

Another approach that's been used before is to have several different filmmakers all collaborate on the same film...directing different parts. Could be a Plan B option that allows for collaboration between different Kosovars. I think this is how "The Smurfs" was filmed during its last season on NBC.

I thought I remembered seeing that on the smurfs...I thought they were on ABC...maybe that was the reruns?

Great ideas...you are a great idea machine!!!
If you come up with anything else, just make me feel like I somehow came up with it!

I think U2 and Dylan are overdone - I'm thinking more along the lines of Right Said Fred. "I'm too sexy for this film?"

I like the concept of a song - of course, I always think of how much it costs to get the rights to use the song, so I wouldn't think it should be the crux of the film.

I agree with Jonathan, that the number of people who actually know what they're doing could be a factor in how this plays out. I know that Tosi is in the planning stages of a documentary about the homeless in Kosova.

My other concern is the parameters you might put on the films. They have seen a lot of violence, and might want to express that visually. How would you deal with the MPAA? :)

For our call for entries, we could specify that we are looking for films that would have the potential to reach the broadest audience; therefore we would ask that the films be suitable for broadcast television.

my first thought is to pool all the hot women around the country and do a Miss Kosovo contest... I would leave my job to serve little sandwiches and cheeses and do the mic test...123 your idea whether it uses inspirational music or not is an interesting one for sure... just stay away from KCMS daily programming please..
